Mask Making:
One of the significant projects in grade seven art is plaster mask making. The lion mask created by Emerson Randlett on our homepage is a great example of A+ work for this assignment! One can use the negative mold placing plaster within a plastic form, or one can use the positive process by building a mask atop a form. Students should "Dress for Mess!" on class days when masks are being built, the dust is pervasive, and wearing surgical masks and aprons is encouraged.
Masks have been a "cultural constant" in society. We find in museums all kinds of masks from all places and times. Masks can be theatric, ritualistic, protective, disquising, or just decorative. We can all name and identify iconic masks: Batman, Comedy, Tragedy, the Phantom of the Opera,Tim Thomas goalie mask ( Boston Bruin's hockey), and many more! What type will you create? Create one we want to display at school and maybe here on this website!
